* Partners Statue Dedication *
Disneyland - November 1993

(partners statue dedication)The celebration event was titled as "Mickey's WorldWide Kids Day". This was to play down the age of Mickey (he was turning 65) - Mickey has a birthday but never gets older...

> Journal - November 17, 1993
The Grand Ballroom at the Disneyland Hotel was packed with food, games, movies and kids. This was the start of the Worldwide Kids Day party. These children (about 7000 in number) were brought in from many countries. Many had never been on a plane! That was the first "E" ticket ride for them. Several children were from very "economically challenged" areas. Some didn't even have shoes. Disney gave all these children shirts, shoes and any other clothing that they needed. Quite a special gesture of the Company to do this for these children. At the party, there was everything in the way of food and deserts that anybody could want. It was interesting that some of the children had never had pizza, or soda ("how do you open this can?"...), I'm sure quite overwhelming! I walked around the ballroom and watched the kids experiencing all of the games, food and music. They're eyes really lit up when Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald came into the room. These characters were the idols of many of the children. It was very touching to see the expressions...

The "Partners Statue" Dedication was to be held at 11:00 am. There was a crew setting up the staging and event. I watched the run-through of the dedication. As I listened to the speech, I got a lump in my throat. It was very moving and I'm glad that I had a chance to hear it before I had to shoot the event. I would have otherwise been distracted...

The VIP's were starting to show up for the ceremony. John Hench, Blaine Gibson (the sculptor of the statue), Marc & Alice Davis, Bill Farmer, Wayne Allwine and Russi Taylor were among the guests. Jack Lindquist, the President of Disneyland (he officially retired that same day) officiated the ceremony. The ceremony began and Roy Disney unveiled the statue. There were many of the children from the "Mickey's WorldWide Kids Day" around to celebrate. A very festive event! I like that Walt's presence will always be represented physically in Disneyland!

> Final thoughts...
The entire "Mickey's WorldWide Kids Day" event was very successful. Disney hosted about 20000 children from all over the world at all of the Disney Parks. These children were treated to something special that most would never have the opportunity to experience any other way. Mickey's birthday was celebrated without saying he was getting older (65 years old... time for Social Security). The Partners Statue has become a very beautiful part of the "hub" at the end of Disneyland's Main Street. Roy did a great job with the speech and everyone seemed to be touched by the words. There is something "charming" about Disneyland, it's history and Walt. It's nice to see that no matter how big the Company gets, some still remember the elements of it's origin.
